The Residential Area to the South East of the Theatre

about-me

One residential quarter is located along the east side of the hill, beneath the south-east side of the Theatre, on a series of artificial terraces. The area, which has been only partly excavated, includes two blocks (insulae) separated by a road paved with stone slabs and overlying a conduit. Excavations uncovered a stretch over 40 m long of this road, which headed towards the theatre, took a right-angle and continued down towards the sea. The stretch marked by an ashlar wall is particularly noteworthy.

The houses, which comprised various, though mostly small rooms, were built in about the middle of the 4th century BC on the remains of earlier buildings dating from at least the 6th century. Traces of building alterations indicate that the area was in use during subsequent periods. The rebuilding in Roman times was particularly important: in insula II (west of the road), a vast room with polychrome mosaic floors dates to the 1st century AD. The decoration consists of rosettes made of lozenges, which enclose wide squares, which, in turn, contain large rosettes made of fourleaved clovers surrounded by a plaited motif; the whole floor is bordered by a meander pattern.
