The Basilica
The history of the construction of the Christian basilica, erected in the central part of the agora, seems long and complex. Probably during the 5th century AD, an area near the small Hellenistic naiskos became the object of Christian devotion and worship probably: a marble chest was placed there, perhaps containing relics of saints. Above this, a small rectangular apsidal building was built, which contained three burials: it is therefore likely that this was a chapel dedicated to some martyrs . In the 6th century AD a basilica was built incorporating both the martyrion and the area occupied by the small temple. The latter was dismantled and the materials reused in the construction. The rectangular slabs of the cella were slightly moved from their original position and put at the base of the walls of the northwest corner of the new building; the paving, however, remained were it was and was considerably extended with other recycled marble, forming the first stretch of the flooring of the north nave. The underlying martyrion probably was recorded only by a mosaic inscription (no longer in place).
